Southworth Elementary School

The new Southworth Elementary is a 65,000 SF school serving 550 students. BCE provided mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering services for this project. This includes design for multiple safety features and state-of-the-art technology.

Students and staff benefit from a secure entry vestibule, a PA system that is accessible from any phone in the school, automated fire doors that when triggered automatically close, as well as a camera system that is available to all administrators via laptop.

The school's HVAC system that serves the classroom wings, library, and administrative spaces are comprised of a Dedicated Outdoor Air Unit (DOAU) to deliver conditioned ventilation air coupled with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heat pump units for heating and cooling. The Gymnasium, Commons-Cafeteria, and Kitchen are served by air handling units with VRF refrigerant coils and variable speed fans with full economizer, operating in a single zone VAV controls configuration.

Students were welcomed to their new school in September of 2022.
