Surprise Lake Middle School is a new school for the Fife School District. BCE provided electrical and mechanical engineering for the 96,774 SF replacement school.
The new building replaces the 1970s school and includes modern amenities like a green roof, a synthetic field, and an enhanced security system featuring CCTV cameras. The building also includes a full access control system with emergency lock-down capabilities.
HVAC for the classrooms and administration area is provided by a 4 pipe Active Chilled Beam (ACB) system. Each space is heated and cooled with the ACB terminals which contain hydronic heating and cooling coils and a zone damper to modulate ventilation air based on space CO2 levels and occupancy. HVAC for the gym, commons, kitchen, and library are provided by variable airflow, four-pipe fan coil units.
The mechanical system is designed to recirculate air only while the building is unoccupied, a key factor in reducing the transmission of airborne illnesses.
The electrical systems include power, lighting, fire alarm, data/communications, security/intrusion detection/CCTV, and intercom clock/speaker systems. Particular attention was paid to sustainability, life cycle cost, and ease of operation and maintenance with the selection of systems and products.
